For the most part, you can rest assured that the exterior of your home is well protected against the elements. This is mainly due to the protection afforded by your shingled roof. The exception to this, however, is your chimney. Your chimney is subject to all kinds of water damage and water erosion, as it sits above your roof and is constantly buffeted by the elements. So what can you do to protect your chimney from spring rains? We have a few solutions for you.
How to Protect Your Chimney from the Elements
Spring is here, and while you have probably given a lot of thought to spring cleaning, you have most likely given little thought to protecting your chimney from spring rains. If water in your chimney becomes common, you will see all sorts of costly damage. Check out our list to learn how to protect your chimney from the elements:
- Install a chimney cap: A chimney cap is the most effective way to prevent water from getting into your chimney, as most water enters straight through the top of the chimney. A chimney cap is a simple installation that will protect your chimney from rain damage.
- Get your chimney cleaned: Most people wait until late fall to call a chimney sweep. We believe it is advantageous to schedule that appointment in the spring. This is because the creosote buildup in your chimney has a strong odor that is only strengthened by heat and humidity that occurs before and after spring rainstorms.
- Waterproof your chimney: Over time, the brick and mortar around your chimney and the masonry of your chimney crown may crack or break. This will allow water to seep into your chimney, which can lead to all sorts of expensive problems. In order to prevent these serious problems, you can apply a chimney sealant to the outside of your chimney and the chimney crown. You can do this on your own, or you can call a professional.
Draft Increasing
If your chimney is short or too wide, it will struggle to get air to your fire to keep it burning for as long as you want it. Other factors that can cause problems include the location of your chimney and the construction of it. If your chimney has draft problems, you should find a chimney cap that helps solve your draft problems. These caps utilize the wind to create stronger updrafts in your chimney.
Single Flue
If your chimney crown is a square or rectangle, you should use a single-flue chimney cap. This is especially advantageous if the flue is above the chimney crown. Single-flue caps are easy to install by screwing them into the flue.
Top Mount
The flue should be at least an inch higher than the chimney crown to use the top-mount cap. The top-mount chimney cap attaches to the chimney with a spout that should be connected to the crown. Then, you’ll need special adhesive or Tapcon screws to keep it in place.
If you need help determining the right chimney caps for your home, contact a professional who can come out and replace it for you. He or she can also take the time to clean out your flue to prevent any fires and keep your home safe.
